Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a sponsoring broker before I start classes?

No.  However, you will need a sponsoring broker before you can work as an agent.  You can now apply for an inactive license.

If I have some college or a degree do I have to take all 180 hours?

In most cases you will only need the required courses of Principles, Law of Contracts and Law of Agency for the 120 "CORE" hours.  The balance will come from your college.  Only TREC can make this determination.

Do I have to take continuing education?

Yes.  You must complete 90 additional core hours (SAE) in the first three years of licensure.  After completing these additional 90 hours you will be required to take 15 hours of Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) for each license renewal.

Why am I required to take MCE when I have been licensed less than three years?

In most cases you have completed your SAE requirement ahead of schedule.  Call TREC for clarification.

Will the 120 hours I took to get my salesperson's license count towards the 270 core hours required for a Broker's license?

Yes.

When I order a HOME STUDY Class is there a minimum time limit.

No.  The Real Estate Commission took a vote on a proposed rule to require a minimum time limit for correspondence and alternative delivery classes.  The vote was 9-0 against having a minimum time limit.

Is the only requirement to complete a HOME STUDY Class passing the proctored open book final exam?

No.  You must complete and return all class assignments for your particular course.

Why do I have to have a Proctored exam when the final exam is open book?

The proctor is to certify that the person who is getting credit is the person taking the exam.

Will a "CORE" class be acceptable for my MCE renewal requirement?

Yes.  However if you take a core class instead of a MCE class from a MCE provider you must send your completion certificate to TREC.

If I wait until the last minute to order my class and or schedule my exam who is responsible for any TREC late fees.

You are.

If I fail the final exam can I only retake the questions I missed?

No.  You must retake the entire exam.

Other schools have the same course name can I take this class from you?

Maybe.  The course name is not what TREC looks at.  They will look at the course number.  If the number is the same then you probably cannot repeat this class within a three year period.  Contact TREC for clarification.
